What did you think of the idea of thinking of someone you want to understand you, then learning Biblical truth and then being asked to apply it to that person? That really makes you look at yourself and not the other person, They want to be understood as much as you do.
How do we become better listeners?
What did we learn? Don't always judge by first impressions. John 7;24 says Stop judging by mere appearances . . . . First impressions are often wrong. Most people are not comfortable meeting new people or new circumstances. We can and need to get to know someone, not jump to quick conclusions.
We looked at Phil 2:4 and not looking our for our only our interest. We should be looking out for others.
3. Don't give an answer before the other person is through talking. Proverbs says he who answers before listening - that is he folly and shame (18:13)
Have you ever don't that? I know I have and it is because I am not understanding, I am thinking ahead.
4. We are to do this calmly? ouch! Proverbs tells us that a man's wisdom gives patience (19:11). maybe we aren't calm because we have not understood. Maybe we have but have we overlooked an offence so God can get glory?
5. Are you an active listener? Proverbs 20:5
6. do you recognise the healing power of a listening ear? James 5:16
7. Do something about what you understand. James 1:22 says Do not merely listen to the word, ans so deceive yourselves. DO what it says. This is how we become more like Jesus!
